Where Summerlin Drivers Get Hit
The 215 Beltway produces the serious ones. At the interchanges at Charleston, Sahara, Lake Mead and Summerlin Parkway, drivers merge at freeway speed into traffic slowing for the exit, and when the Beltway stops, the rear-end crashes come in chains. Summerlin Parkway adds its own merges and the curve where it meets the 215. Charleston, Sahara, Lake Mead and Far Hills are the wide, fast arterials. Downtown Summerlin, the Town Center and Rampart corridors and the shopping centers along Charleston produce the parking lot and driveway crashes: drivers pulling out across a bike lane and a sidewalk into traffic, backing crashes in the garages, and rear-end collisions at the signals. The villages are built around roundabouts, school zones and long collector streets where drivers speed. The gated communities have private streets, where the crash is still an LVMPD call and the gate camera is the best witness. State Route 159 to Red Rock Canyon puts visitors, cyclists and residents on two lanes with a view. The crashes there are drivers looking at the mountains instead of the road.
Sun City Summerlin and Injuries to Older Residents
Sun City Summerlin is one of the largest age-restricted communities in the West, and many of the people hurt in Summerlin crashes are in their sixties, seventies and eighties. When the Other Side Is the City or the County
Some Summerlin crashes involve a government: a city or county truck, a police vehicle, a signal that failed, or a road designed or maintained in a way that caused the crash. Those claims run under different rules. NRS 41.035 caps a tort award against a Nevada government body at $200,000 per claimant with no punitive damages, and NRS 41.036 requires the claim to be filed with the governing body within two years. In Summerlin the first question is which government: a crash on the city side is a claim against the City of Las Vegas, and a crash in Summerlin South is a claim against Clark County. What if the crash was inside a gated community?
A crash on a private street is still an LVMPD call and still a Nevada claim. The community's gate cameras usually recorded the cars entering and leaving, and the HOA's records show who had access, so the claim is worked the same way with one more source of evidence.
Who investigates a crash on the 215 in Summerlin?
The Nevada Highway Patrol handles the 215 Beltway and Summerlin Parkway; LVMPD handles the streets on both sides of the city line. The event number and the officer's card tell you which one you have.
How long do I have to file a car accident claim in Summerlin?
Two years from the crash under NRS 11.190, the same as everywhere in Nevada. A claim against the City of Las Vegas or Clark County also has to be filed with the governing body within two years.
